Hellcat. Phantom. Spirit.
These names sound like they could have come straight out of a story written for Halloween. In reality, however, they belong to three extraordinary machines that left their mark on the history of American military technology.
The M18 Hellcat became famous for its remarkable speed for a tracked vehicle. The F-4 Phantom II became one of the most recognizable combat aircraft of the Cold War era. The B-2 Spirit continues to attract attention with its futuristic silhouette and stealth technology.
This Halloween, let's take a closer look at this extraordinary trio and the stories behind their distinctive names.
M18 Hellcat – The Devilishly Fast Tank Destroyer
The M18 Hellcat was an American tank destroyer developed during World War II. Unlike heavily armored vehicles, its greatest strength was its mobility.
The Hellcat could reach speeds exceeding 80 km/h (50 mph), making it one of the fastest tracked combat vehicles of its era. Crews would use this advantage to quickly reposition themselves during combat operations.
The name Hellcat alone would be enough to earn it a place in our Halloween lineup. But there's another detail that makes this particular vehicle an especially fitting choice.
The Black Cat That Made Its Way onto the Armor
Our M18 Hellcat "Crock of Cognac" #2679 represents a historical vehicle from the 805th Tank Destroyer Battalion, which fought during the Italian Campaign.
The vehicle featured the unit's distinctive emblem depicting a black cat against an orange background. It's hard to imagine a symbol more fitting for Halloween, although in this case, it's not a decoration but a genuine piece of the vehicle's history.
We recreated this model at a scale of 1:28 using 1,026 pieces. It features a detailed interior, a removable Continental R-975-C4 engine, a rotating turret and working tracks. The set also includes a commander figure.
F-4C Phantom II – The Ghost of the Jet Age
From the ground, we take to the skies, where the F-4 Phantom II awaits.
This American two-seat supersonic aircraft was developed by McDonnell Aircraft. Originally designed for the U.S. Navy, its impressive capabilities led to its adoption by the U.S. Air Force and Marine Corps as well.
The Phantom became particularly well known during the Vietnam War. It was a versatile aircraft used for a wide range of missions, including air-to-air combat, ground attacks and reconnaissance.
More Than Twice the Speed of Sound
The F-4 Phantom II could reach speeds exceeding Mach 2. Combined with its substantial weapons-carrying capacity and ability to perform various types of missions, this made it one of the most iconic military aircraft of its era.
In our collection, this legendary aircraft is represented by the F-4C Phantom II #2427.
The 1:48 scale model consists of 738 pieces and features an opening cockpit, retractable landing gear and movable components. We've also included a display stand, allowing the Phantom to be showcased in a dynamic flight position.
The name "Phantom" fits perfectly with the Halloween atmosphere, but the history behind this aircraft is far more fascinating than its ghostly name might suggest.
B-2 Spirit – The Ghost That's Hard to Detect
The final aircraft in our lineup fits the Halloween theme for more reasons than just its name.
The Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit was designed to minimize the likelihood of detection. Combined with its dark silhouette and distinctive shape, it's hard to imagine a better aircraft to complete our Halloween trio.
The B-2 program began in 1981, and the aircraft made its first flight in 1989. It was developed as a strategic bomber incorporating advanced stealth technology.
The Distinctive Flying Wing Design
One of the most remarkable features of the B-2 is its flying wing design. The absence of a conventional tail and its distinctive wide silhouette make the aircraft look completely different from most military planes.
The B-2's shape is also a key part of its design, helping to reduce its radar detectability.
In our Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit #5916 set, we've recreated the aircraft's distinctive silhouette at a scale of 1:100. The model consists of 1,109 pieces and features an opening bomb bay and a display stand.
Three Dark Names, Three Completely Different Stories
The Hellcat, Phantom and Spirit represent three distinct stages in the development of American military technology.
The first comes from the battlefields of World War II. The second became one of the most iconic aircraft of the supersonic fighter jet era. The third represents a much later stage in aviation development, showcasing the capabilities of stealth technology.
And since all three are available in our collection, you can build your very own trio: Hellcat, Phantom and Spirit.
